Community Engagement Updates
  • The Development Department hosted the third session of the Citizen Academy, where participants learned about the department’s services and its role in the organization. The session also covered the Planning & Zoning Commission, the Comprehensive Plan, and highlighted upcoming community projects. The participants have five more sessions to go!
  • The City of Smithville was featured in the Missouri Parks & Recreation Magazine for the Emerald Ridge Playground! Check out the article on page 19 of the document.

Senior Center Updates
  • Pool tournament kicked off on Wednesday!  There was some serious competition for the bragging rights!
  • The Senior Center will be closed Monday for Labor Day
  • A third Strength & Balance fitness class will be offered Wednesdays at 8am beginning September 3
Project Updates
  • Commercial Ave Sidewalk: The contractor originally awarded the Commercial Avenue Pedestrian Project informed the City they are ceasing operations and will not be able to complete the work. The City is coordinating with the bond company, and MoDOT to select a new contractor.  Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
  • Water Treatment Plant Improvements: ongoing
  • 144th Pump Station and West Bypass project: construction began on June 2, work in progress along 144th St near the pump station. 
  • Sidewalk Replacement Program (Harborview): in progress. Anticipated completion: Fall 2025
  • Diamond Crest Park Parking Lot: delayed due to water leak
  • Basin Maintenance Program: implementation began last month
  • Street Maintenance Program: Awarded to Asphaltic Surfaces. Location: Commercial Avenue (From 92 HWY to Meadow St). Work has been rescheduled for Spring 2026.

Maintenance Updates  

  • Parks
    • Fixed and adjusted fence gates throughout the parks to improve safety and accessibility for visitors.
    • Repaired the water fountain at Heritage Park, restoring a convenient water source for park users.
    • Mowed grass in multiple park areas to keep grounds well-maintained and welcoming.
    • Painted and prepped sports fields to ensure they are ready for upcoming games and practices.
    • Set up soccer goals in preparation for the first week of practice!
  • Streets
    • Roadside mowing was completed along DD Highway, NW 144th Street, NE 176 from the county line to HH Lake Road, as well as multiple commercial corridors and residential routes to improve visibility, safety, and appearance in high-traffic areas.
    • Roadway maintenance included pothole patching with 8 bags of cold mix and installation of a street patch in front of a funeral home to address pavement deterioration.
    • Utility work included repairing and flushing a water main break to restore proper water service to the area.
    • Preventive maintenance was performed on heavy equipment, including an oil change for the skid loader, to keep machinery in good working order.
    • Sidewalk improvement projects advanced with sections in Harbor View cut and prepared for replacement, and drainage capacity was improved with the installation of a French drain by the animal control facility using 15 tons of rock and 100 feet of drain tile.
    • Equipment and supply updates included replenishing 700 acorn nuts for streetlights, restocking operational supplies such as washer fluid and brake cleaner, and completing truck electrical repairs with fuse replacement and tarp system adjustments.
  • Utilities 
    • Total Drinking Water Production 8,794,000 gal
    • Treated 5,026,000 gallons of wastewater
    • Completed 26 work orders and 65 locates
    • Completed all testing required at the WTP and WWTP
    • Completed weekly taste and odor sample from the lake.
    • Staff received a call of low water pressure and low water level in the north tower. Since we did not have an exact location staff had to search for the leak. Luckily it was found quickly and isolated so repairs could be made. The time to have it completely repaired from the time they found it was 4 hours.
    • Staff completed lift station checks and maintenance. All grounds keeping was completed at this time.
    • Staff cleaned and completed all maintenance required on the UV light system.
    • Staff repaired a water service on 1505 Mary Circle.
    • Completed monthly disconnects for non-payment.
