No.  The City of Smithville does not issue permits for alarm systems.  We do recommend that you make sure your alarm company has the phone number for the dispatch center on file, 816-858-3521.  This will ensure the quickest response possible.
Why does the Smithville Police Department use the Platte County Sheriff’s Department’s Communications Center, when Smithville is in Clay County?

We moved our police communications to the Platte County Sheriff’s Department for several reasons.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Department currently dispatches for the Smithville Fire Protection District and the Northland Regional Ambulance District, both of which provide services to Smithville.  Moving the police communications will allow all aspects of public safety to communicate much easier, and provide better service for the community.

This move also allowed us to roll our telephones over after hours and on weekends and holidays.  This means that when you call the police department after hours you will speak to a dispatcher, not a recorded message as you would have in the past.

Platte County has implemented a new, state of the art, radio system that offers better coverage to our area.

We believe this move will provide better services to the citizens of Smithville.

Does the Smithville Police Department have a ride-along program?
Yes.  The ride-along is an observer only, and should not become involved in or interfere with an situation, either physically or verbally.  Ride-alongs should be dressed in either business casual attire or neat, clean, casual attire.  Jeans, shorts, spandex, leggings, T-shirts, and sweats are not acceptable.  Official uniforms, EMS, law enforcement attire, police academy uniforms, and any clothing/equipment resemble these are prohibited.   Cameras and tape recorders are not permitted.  The officer may terminate the ride if the participant fails to follow the regulations or is acting in a manner inconsistent with the best interest of the Police Department.
